Chenin Blanc is a highly revered white variety from the central regions of the Loire Valley.
It makes sweet, semi-sweet and dry white wines and also sparkling wine.
The famous Loire Valley wines of Vouvray are made from Chenin Blanc.
Other appellations using Chenin include Montlois, Savennieres and Saumur.
It is also grown in the Languedoc Region where it is a component of the sparkling wine Cremant de Limoux.
In South Africa and in New Zealand its ability to produce heavy crops made it popular to produce cheap wines.
It was very popular in Western Australia as a varietal white and as a component of blends, think “White Burgundy”. Still popular, but in decline in WA.
Has a bad reputation due to ability to produce characterless wines.
But with care in the vineyard and careful wine making this variety can make delicious and interesting wines.
