Darby’s Taste and Talk 24 April note change of date
International Malbec Day
International Malbec Day is celebrated on 17th April. Things will be very festive in Buenos Aires, but even if you can’t get to that fabulous city there are events around the wine world on or close to that date. Or you still have time to organise your own Malbec day party.
Some facts about Malbec
Malbec originated near the town of Cahors in SW France.
In France it was originally called Cot, but this usage is losing fashion, even around Cahors.
The black wines of Cahors have been loved by connoisseurs for generations. They are dark, of course, velvety-soft on the palate and deeply flavoured.
Malbec is grown throughout SW France, but it is declining in area planted.
In Argentina,Malbec is by far the most popular red variety.
In Australia, Malbec has had a roller coaster ride, it was in decline for decades before a revival in the past 15 years. Before the 1990s Malbec was commonly used in red blends, often with Cabernet Sauvignon. That blending role was supplanted by Merlot.
The revival has seen many Australian producers using Malbec as a varietal wine. There are now over 200 Australian Malbec producers listed on Vinodiversity.
