This was the first time I saw wine marketed in a can entered into a wine Show.
This wine was judged along with 23 others in Other White Italian Wines Class. It received a silver medal. We will be talking more about canned wine in the Taste and Talk on Thursday 28th Nov.
Some other points of interest from AAVWS 2024
Tahbilk usually get a gold or Marsanne. This year it was for the younger release, the 2023 vintage. The 2019 received a bronze. The 2023 picked up a trophy for International Judge’s Wine to Watch.
What used to called Petit manseng is now either Gros Manseng or just Manseng.
Three of the 17 Albarinos entered won gold. What I found interesting was the spread of regions where it is grown. Gold medals were from Alpine Valleys (Gapstead) Rutherglen (Stanton and Killeen) and Riverland (Ricca Terra)
The Rose class continues strongly. 28 entries, two gold medals from wines made with Sangiovese and Aglianico respectively.
There were just 6 Sagrantino wines entered all won a medal. Andrew Peace Wines from Swan Hill got a gold for the 2021 Australia Felix Sagrantino.
The Nebbiolo class must have wowed the judges. 18 of the 20 wines received medals. The sole gold was won by Michelini wines 2023 Nebbiolo.
Two Mencia wines in a field of 7 won gold. Both from McLaren Vale, Ministry of Clouds and Oliver’s Taranga.
Three Gamay wines received gold medals, Saffron Gramophone (NE Vic), XO Wine Co (Adelaide Hills) and Hesketh (Adelaide Hills)

They are having a Nellie Melba moment.
