The last Saturday of February (this year 25th of Feb) is celebrated as Open that Bottle Night.
The idea is that at least once a year you should review your cellar to check up on that bottle that you have been keeping for too long.
I won’t be opening this one but somehow it has survived in the back of my cellar for a few too many decades.
Way back when this wine was made we all thought that the bigger the better was the way to go for red wines. And Barney Gehrig who had the Rutherglen winery knew how to make them bigger and more robust than most, even in the context of 1970s Ritherglen.
I don’t think this wine was ever all that pleasant to drink. Maybe that’s the key to its survival. I probably tried a couple of and pushed this one to the back of the pile. We all thought that these wines needed ‘just a bit more time’. After a decade or two we came to the realisation that maybe age wasn’t going to improve the wine so much.
What will you be opening on Sat Feb 25?
Time to start planning.
Invite a few friends around.
Organise some food.
Then open a bottle or two that you fear might be about to slip over the edge.
Make sure you have some reserves, just in case the stars of the show are too far over the hill.
I’m not sure what I will be drinking. Maybe that 2003 Clare Valley Riesling.
