I finalised the data for Rare Ozzies in about September 2019 so it is timely to look at which of the varieties have become more popular since then.
I am relying on my Vindata spreadsheet. It consists of about 1300 wineries which are using alternative varieties in Australia. There are about 160 varieites in the list I have been building, editing and deleting Vindata for well over a decade. New wineries are appearing and many have alternative varieties. Other wineries have disappeared - sold, owners retired or no longer producing alternative varieties.
Early in 2019 I noticed that there were many varieties with just a few producers. I was most surprised to find that there were about 120 varieties in this category. I dubbed them Rare Ozzies.
My rule of thumb when including a variety as a Rare Ozzie was that there had to be ten or less producers. Since then a number of the originals have become more popular and hence lo longer meet the criterium, but the book has been printed.
The Taste and Talk on Thursday will look at what has happened in this corner of our wine scene over the past two years.
The link to join the Taste and Talk session will be available here from 5pm on Thursday 23rd.
Details of the Rare Ozzies book are here. You can download the digital version from Amazon and I will be offering special pricing for the printed version at the Taste and Talk session.
