In last week’s Taste and talk we discussed the question - What is the most Vinodiverse region in Australia?
This is a difficult question because first we need to define it.
Is it the regions with the most alternative varieties, or the most producers. Maybe we should look for the region with the most Rare Ozzies or maybe the producers of Rare Ozzies. Perhaps use percentages instead of raw numbers
Rather than going into a massive statistical analysis I chose, rather subjectively, five regions - one from each of the five mainland states of Australia. On a different day I would have probably chosen a very different set.
The chosen regions are
Geographe (WA)
Riverland (SA)
King Valley (Vic)
Mudgee (NSW)
Granite Belt (Qld)
Then I made some graphics to get an overview of varieties in each of the chosen regions.
Here’s what the Riverland looks like. Size of font relies on number of producers. Sangiovese and Tempranillo omitted to make space.
You can see the pdf of the slides for the presentation including the graphics for the other regions via Vinodiversity’s Wine Articles page.

Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show
This used to be a fixture on my calendar but things have changed. In the wider world, not the show. I used to attend the Seminar, the tasting and the long lunch, but now …
This is the only show devoted entirely to alternative varieties and it attracts a wide range of varieties. It gives me a heads up on new varieties and producers including a few new producers of rare ozzies. Pecorino and Friulano seem to be on the up and up.
The judging took place last week, the trophies and medals have been won and the results published.
Results of the judging can be can be found on the AAVWS website.
Taste and Talk 6 - New Rare Ozzies
The theme the next Taste and Talk will be new Rare Ozzies.
The idea is you grab a glass of wine preferably an alternative variety and Zoom in for a 5.30 start on Thursday November 11.
See the calendar for details and the Zoom address
Don’t forget you can find more about rare ozzie by searching the #rareozzies tag on Social Media.
Cheers
