Last week in Friday on My Vine #4 I posed a few questions. Here are the answers
The wine region with that particular mix of varieties is the Granite Belt
Champagne varieties -mainly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, but also small amounts of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Petit Melsier and Arbane are also permitted and used in small quantities by a few producers.
Favorita is a synonym for Vermentino. Other synonyms include Rolle and Pigato
Vaccaresse is a red wine form S France
The Verd Question.
Verdelho is from Madeira but it makes dry whites in Australia
These names are all prime names of grape varieties. I use Jancis Robinson’s method of designating the prime name ie. what is it called in its place of origin.
Verdea
Verdeca
Verdejo
Verdelho
Vedello
Verdesse (aka Verdasse)
Verdiccio Bianco
Verdil
Verdiso
Verdoncho
Verduzzo Friulano
Verduzzo Trevigiano
There are about another dozen Grape varieties with a Verd??? name as a synonym, but that is not their prime name.
This is such an important issue for grape variety nerds I think I’ll have to write an article about it.
Page updates on Vinodiversity
I have been busy transferring data from my giant Vindata spreadsheet into pages on Vinodiversity. This weed about a dozen pages have had their lists of varieties and producers edited. You can catch up on which pages have been updated here.
By the way I don’t have a systematic way of gathering data for my lists. So if you are browsing on Vinodiversity and spot an error or omission please send me a message.
Reminder Taste and Talk sessions
Our next session will be held on June 15 at 5pm. We will be discussing the rise and fall and resurrection of Chardonnay (how did I get talked into that?) I will send a Substack message to subscribers with the Zoom link on the morning of the event.
